Many Christian women wear different clothing and have restrictions by their faith and they feel the same as you. Yet, there is a difference in many nations where women are beat, ridiculed, disowned or killed for violating dress codes, or behavior deemed acceptable. So maybe a weeeeee bit oppressed. I know you do not celebrate Easter but I wish you a Happy Spring.

None of the veil wearing women, in any religion or culture, is either oppressed or un-educated. Ask from her, when you meet a covered woman in any culture; such as IndianRajasthani, SikhRulingRoyalty, Nurses, Nuns, Victorian-age Ladies(some are still there), or one of the innumerable Muslim Lady who is a Ph.D, a Doctor with a Fellowship in her speciality, just anyone. Thank Goodness, they prefer veil to nudity.

Its the classic feminist question : why do smart women participate in their own oppression?

Your point is well taken but given that the first thing the Taliban did was to deny women an education in Afghanistan, these educated women should be demonstrating in the streets.

Unless the men told them not to.....which would make them oppressed.

Certainly not.

I believe that there are plenty of women who wear them because they are arrogant and vain enough to believe that the mear sight of their face will drive men to impure thoughts, and I believe there are plenty who wear them simply because they make an obvious pious and self-righteous statement about their religious affiliation.

Nope. That would be a mass generalization that borders on sterotyping a religion.
