My child will be celebrating her birthday this week, and I'm trying to think of a snack that we can bring into her preschool that's not too messy or sugary. Most kids bring in cookies, donut holes, cupcakes. If we brought stickers or coloring books instead of a snack, would that be so bad? There are 13 kids in the class. Thanks for any ideas!

I'd just like to add that I'm not opposed to cookies or cupcakes, but my daughter has allergies and frequently misses out on the snacks that are brought into the classroom. I know she feels bad about this so I was trying to think of another idea...

I like your idea of the colouring books or stickers. Other options might be a tray of friut, crayons, things that your child can eat.
For my daughter's first birthday party, we gave each child a cookie cutter so the kids could make their own cookies at home. We also gave them sidewalk chalk...all the parent's loved the alternatives I provided.
I think you just might start a trend at your pre-school by providing an alternative to the usual choices.

I think the stickers or coloring books is a great idea. My granddaughter goes to pre-school and some of the parents have even brought fruit trays for the kids and they love them. They eat mostly grapes, bananas and apples. I am sure the teacher would appreciate a non-sugary snack!

buy a big box of crayons and tie 3 or 4 together and place them in a treat bag along with a small note pad. and maybe a few stickers.
i worked at a preschool and the kids LOVED this treat the best.
another child brought in a fruit tray that was bought at the grocery store and a fruit dip.....the mom came in early to divide up the fruit and pour the dip over the furit....this was also a big hit.

I usually send cheese cut into shapes and cut-up fruit. I think a little protein does the kids a lot better than sugar.
But bringing little goody gift bags with stickers and maybe some noisemakers or cheap, age-appropriate party favors I think is a lovely idea. It's not a rule you have to bring food, and your daughter giving little gifts to everyone will be lots of fun.

Good for you!! My son is starting school this year and that is exactly what I plan to do.. I think coloring books and crayons are a great idea.. If you want to bring food also a fruit tray would be good... It's nice to know that their are some other nutrition conscience parents out there.. Good luck to you

i think that not providing a junk food snack as a way to celebrate is an AWESOME idea!
why not go to the dollar store (or if on the west coast i think they call them 99cent stores) and make a little goodie bag for everyone. crayons and little notepad, oh! a jumprope would be great, encourage exercise instead, remember those little "pills" that you would drop in water and they'd become spongy animals?
i think you're on the right track, kudos to you!

It's her birthday, what does she want to bring? I imagine you are expected to provide a snack for the whole class that day. If she wants junk, do it. If she wants fun fruit kabobs, do it. It's fun to make their day special. You can find recipes for treats with less sugar. Try allrecipes.com for ideas.

I always bring apple sauce and goldfish treats. The kids absolutely love them and the teachers always thank me ecause it is not junk!
We arent allowed to bring homemade treats, so i usually get the individual packs of applesauce and crackers...
I know preschoolers love to do things by themselves!

I love the idea of stickers and books!!! That will last a lot longer than a donut hole, too.

SO happy to read of a parent who is nutrition conscious :-)
For a treat how about apple slices with a caramel drizzle?
Banana slices on ritz crackers?
