Try using your Internet Explorer browser. Click File, Open, and browse to the Word file you're trying to open.

What is the extension on the file - does it say .doc? If not it may not be a word file and you may need another program to open it. It could be a Works file or a Word Perfect file.

Are you sure it's a word file? My next question would be what version of WORD is it? It's possible you have a file in a higher version of Word than the program you are trying to open it on. If this is the case, the document owner needs to re-save the file in a lower version. Another option would be to send the file to someone else and see if they can launch it. Who created the file you are trying to open? Can they open it?

In my job I've had problems opening up all kinds of files. Sometimes I get it open sometimes it just won't. Sometimes the file gets corrupt and can't be read. Which may be the case here.
