My 2 year old daughter has had a rash for 14 days. It is on her stomach, arms, legs, ankles and wrists. It is NOT on her face, back, or diaper area. I've taken her to two different doctors. The first one said it was a viral rash even though she showed no signs of sickness in the last few months. Not even a cold. The second doctor (seen on 01/18) said it doesn't look viral at all. She said that it looked like an allergy of some sort. She prescribed Orapred and Loratadine and said the rash should fade and go away. I have a call into the doctor but haven't heard back yet. My daughter's rash has not spread anymore but it is not any better. Am I jumping the gun or should her rash have faded at least a little by now? I'm worried about her. She is pale and has darkness under her eyes. Other than that and the rash she seems to be fine. What is causing this and how do I make it stop?

Thank you for your opinions but I have changed to a milder laundry detergant since her rash began. It hasn't helped. Also, she doesn't have a rash on her back at all. Any more ideas ?... please. Thanks

Dark circles under the eyes are a dead giveaway for inhaled allergies. (cat dander, dog dander, dust mites)
I would hate to lead you in the wrong direction though. Rashes on babies often appear out of nowhere.
Have you put any lotion on her? Kids are very sensitive to perfumes.
Do you live in a place where it is cold and dry? After a long bath (with no perfumed soaps/bubblebath), put baby oil on her skin while the skin is still a little damp.
Good luck.

2 weeks is long time for her to still have a rash, especially if it is being treated. How long has she been pale and had darkness under her eyes? To me, it seems like if she doesnt have any further symptoms and if the rash is not extremely uncomfortable, its not much to worry about. Of course you want it to go away, but if it is not hurting her, then its not really an emergency, I would talk to your doctor definetly, and see what she says. But she may just have sensitive skin. Have you started using new soap, shampoo, laundry detergent or softener. Did you recently get a pet, could she have eczema? new carpet cleaner? has she been eating something that she doesnt usually eat? all of these things plus more could cause what you are describing. I know you are worried, but like I said, if she is not in pain, and the doctors werent terribly concerned, it is OK. Good luck!
By the way... I'm not saying give up or anything, I'm just trying to ease your mind, and make sure you didnt overlook something simple that could be causing it! :)

The rash should be gone by now if it has been 14 days. If she has not bee seen by a dermatologist that is the doc she needs to see. Consider changing your laundry soap to an all natural one as a starter and get rid of any cleaning products you currently have in your home and switch to all natural ones. Use only a mild soap on her skin like ivory for now. Take all of her clothes and bedding and wash them in the all natual laundry product to rid of any residue from the old laundry products. Be sure to run the new laundry soap through the washer with no clothes in to get rid of any residue from the old laundry product. Until you can get her in to see the doc try making sure what you feed her for food is all natural and has not additives or dyes etc. Good luck.

I have heard of this problem before from a friend. The doctors guessed at what it was. I suggested to use a laundry detergent that was free of chemicals, perfume and fillers. I sold her what I use. The problem cleared up in no time. Some laundry detergents that are sold in stores contain a lot of ingredients that don't really help in cleaning. The fillers act as an abrasive and instead of cleaning the fabric is rubbed by them, like sandpaper sanding wood. And the perfume doesn't clean. It is put in there to make it "smell clean." Want to know more, please e mail me.

It could be the laundry detergent you use. She might be allergic to it and that causes the rash on the areas that are exposed to it. Try a very gentle, frangrance/dye free detergent. My friend's 2 yo daughter had the same thing after staying at her grandma's house for a week (they used different detergent on clothes and sheets). That might be why it's not going away. It can't hurt to try new detergent.

along with all the other excellent answers you have received I'd also like to suggest that I may be caused by a bath soap that you have recently used to bathe your baby?? Even if its supposed to be very mild/especially for babies. Some people are simply very sensitive to chemicals ingredients and react to them as you've described. Change her soap to a pure and natural goats milk soap you should be able to get from any health food store. Goats milk is very mild and has no chemicals or irritants whatsoever. It may also be her hair/shampoo - conditioner. Have you recently changed it? Try using an organic one from a health food store. It may cost a couple of $ more but for the peace of mind will be well worth it.

sounds like could be ecxema?
without seeing the rash...does the rash have tear shapes -- in children this can be childhood psoriasis....my son had this at about 2 years....we put medicated ointment (prescription cortizone cream) on each spot as soon as we noticed them appearing. after the first week the spots went away and reappeared sporadically over the next year - if left they began to spread so we were careful to apply cream each time. After this they vanished completely.
good luck ziggy
