Most of the time dogs do not get sick from drinking from rivers and streams BUT they can pick up a nasty digestive bug called Giardia from contaminated water. Giardia can be very persistant and hard to cure. I don't encourage my dogs to drink from water sources other than what I can provide.

I think it's ok as long as they don't drink a ton of it all the time, and assuming the river you speak of isn't unusually polluted. Even if they did drink it all the time, I'm still not sure it would really hurt them. I think letting your dog have a drink from the river while on a walk now and then is fine. I've always let my dogs do that and not seen any problem with it.

i does no longer propose it. I did a examine paper final 365 days on Rachel Carson and our surroundings. you does no longer have believed how many chemical compounds have been dumped into the Hudson River up for the duration of the Nineteen Nineties. The chemical compounds have been so undesirable that the federal government has outlawed their use. They brought about many issues interior the fish and organic international, yet additionally in people. those chemical compounds take a protracted time to get out of the water. hence i does no longer drink it in any respect. (Up interior the mountains by using Canada the Hudson River water is probable ok.)

Depending on where you live...I know that in Ontario, Canada the rivers contain a bacteria that is dangerous to dogs which gives dog a virus called Bever Fever. Contact your local dog shelters or vet and ask if the rivers around your area have bacteria, etc. that may harm your dog. Also, call your local parks department and ask them as a secondary!

I think it's perfectly okay. I mean I grew up with dogs that would stay out in the fields with the cattle and the horses and drink out of the same creek or whatever water source was around as the cattle and horses. Also, dogs will eat cow and horse poop..it's nothing uncommon. Plus, when you really think of it, what do the wolves and coyotes eat while they are out and about...Streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, even mud puddles. It's nothing harmful.

River water is probably much cleaner than the tap water your dog is currently drinking. Make sure the river is indeed flowing and not standing still, as standing water of any kind is a magnet for bugs. We buy bottled water for our dogs due to their sensitive stomachs, it is only $0.89 for a gallon and a gallon lasts about 3 days.

That depends on where you live. One of the rivers near me is fine but, another is used for shipping oil tankers and is not. I take my dogs to the river to play and of course they drink it. I just keep them away from the other one.
