I just realized that my a folder containing my birth certificate is missing from a break in that took place months ago. I know the birth certificate does not have the ssn on it, but what can a criminal do with your birth certificate that I need to be concerned about? Is there anyone I should contact?

Your physical birth certificate is a very dangerous piece of identification to have stolen. I would if you have not already done so, flag all of 3 credit reporting companies that your identification has been stolen. Check to make sure no credit has been taken out. If the thief is able to get or fake one more piece of identification, they can get a driver's license, social security card and then credit cards. There really is no way to stop the social security if it is stolen as well. The Social Security department does nothing to stop id theft.

You could possibly become the victim of phising. Put high-security alert (passwords etc.) on all of your accounts. Get in touch with the county clerk of the county you were born in to obtain a new birth certificate.

They theoretically could use it to obtain a social security number, but since you already have one issued, the SSA would notice. I wouldn't be too concerned.
