BASS Fisherman's answer is probably best, but let me add you might want to get a 6' or 6'6" triggerstick model. Don't go for the pistol grip and buy cork grips with Fuji brand guides. Stay away from 2pc models. Shimano, Daiwa, AllStar are all good rods for the price. Berkely, Abu Garcia, Shakespeare, Zebco make decent rods that are available for less than $50. Bass Pro has some combos that are pretty nice for about $100 for rod/reel. As for line, buy Trilene XT 14lb test.

Hope you enjoy the greatest watersport on Earth!

if the person is under 12, go with a closed bailed reel. with a good heavy line. something in the 8 to 12 lb test area. zebco has long been the leader in closed bailed reels, and have the most models available to choose from. a closed bail reel winds the line into an enclosed housing, thus making it much easier to mind. and is a little easier to learn how to cast also. if its for anyone 8 or under i wouldnt recommend a rod any longer then 4.5 feet. 12 years up go with 5.5 to 6 ft. if we are talking about wanting a nice all around first fishing rod for a teenager or an adult, i saw this well known fishing mag rate plueger presidential series combo up there with rods and reels costing 5 times as much. right up there with stella and g loomis. so i decided to buy one. mine is the one under the presidential though. it is called the trion combo. ive never used a nicer rod or reel in my life. everything is state of the art. im-8 graphite rod, which im sure somewhere someone is making a im-9 as we speak, the rod is so light its as if you are only holding the line. and the reel is so smooth it retrives under the handles own wieght if you twirl it. you wont find any better prices vs quality then anything plueger makes. you could probably find a pesidential rod/reel combo for 75 bucks easy at cabelas or bass pro shop. and they have other really super nice combos for any budget. and for line i like to keeps 2 spools ready. keep that in mind when shopping for your rod/reel. alot of places give you an xtra spool. then i recommend using a '' super line '' such as berkly'' fireline'' or '' spyderwire'' on one spool and a monofiliment line on the other spool. usually the lighter the line you can use as possible is best. you would be surprised what huge fish people caught on 2lb test mono. the superline will work best if you decide to toss any artificial baits, and the mono is best for live bait fishing. now youre covered on all areas. but seriously i cant praise plueger products enough. especially what they have in the 50 to 100 dollar range. you wont find a better quality vs price anywhere on the market. so if i was going to buy my first fishing rod it would deffinately be a pluger trion or presidential.

well first of all, if you are buying for a child/kid beginner you should probably just go to Wal-Mart and buy one, but if it for yourself and I'm going on the assumption you arnt a kid, well it depends but if you are just looking for a once in a while user then i would recommend also just going to Wal-Mart for that, but if you are planning on really getting into thee sport then i would recommend going to cabelas.com or ordering there catalog and checking out what the have i would definitely recommend a Fen wick rod with a Mitchel spinning open face reel. For whatever you are buying it for i would recommend going with an open face spinning combo of some kind. As for the line i always just use triline 6ilb test on all my summer poles, i have tried all these new types of line like spider-wire,fireline etc, but i still prefer good old triline.
