Like will they be let on the plane? Will the INS really get involved if their traveling to there home counrty? Or will they just be red flagged and not let back in? What really happens?

You will not be allowed to even check in to an international flight without a passport. Regardless of wether it is to your home country or not. Without a passport you will not even get close to the plane. The only exceptions I am aware of are persons being deported by the BCIS (where special paperwork can be done in liue of a passport) and US military personel travelling on official orders (with a valid Department of defense ID card) All other people Must have a passport.

The airlines are SUPPOSED to check your passport and vsa documents before you get on the plane. However, as you may or may not have noticed they sometimes seem a little distracted so it is theoretically possible they could overlook an expired passport or even forget to check it all toghther. Odd are 95% you would NOT be let on the plane though if you passport was not valid.

Now lets say you were, when you get to your destintation country you WILL NOT be allowed in. immigration officials do not make mistakes. If you need a valid passport and yours is not, they will turn you around and make you go home. Often times you will not have to pay extra to the airline since they are supposed to check all yuor documents before bording ther plane though.

They would most definitely not be allowed back into the plane. If they are not citizens, they will be deported if they try to leave the country after over-staying their 6 months.

NO, you will not be let on the plane. When you go to check-in at the airport you will not be given a boarding pass to even get you past security.
