I know this doesn't truly answer your question, but I can not believe in any religion that would tell me that a loving, kind, and good-hearted person of a different religion would burn enternally in a pit of fire and flames merely because they have a different religion. In fact, I don't believe in hell at all. And I certainly don't believe that anyone has a right to condemn someone else to it regardless if it is real or not. I do hope there is a 'heaven' though; a place where everyone finds peace.

Becoming a Christian is a heart felt decision. If the man realized he was a sinner and was very sorry for that and ask God to forgive him and ask Jesus to become his personal savior, yes he would be a Christian and go to heaven. The bible tells us that God doesn't wish anyone to go to hell, but its our choice to accept Jesus or reject him. The bible also tells us this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached unto all the world and then the end shall come. God wants everyone to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ, so they can make a decision to follow Him or not. God is good.

Ironically, telling someone about God is the best way to damn him.
Many people believe that the ignorant are not to blame for their lack of knowledge of God, so they go to Heaven. This includes children, the mentally deficient, and isolated people. As a just god could not possibly punish a stillborn infant for not believing in him, the average Christian reasons that such a soul is guaranteed to go to Heaven.
And such would be the case of the Chinese farmer who has never heard of God; he has no choice but to not believe in God. His salvation rate is 100%.
Yet, when his son tells me about Jesus, he gives the farmer a choice. Now, he can either believe in Jesus or not. His salvation rate suddenly drops to below 100%.
This is why missionary work is dangerous. The fate of souls should never rest in mortal hands, yet many missionaries arrogantly presume to do God's work. They damn people that would have been saved otherwise.
There is a reason that the Bible encourages people to praise God quietly.
Of course, there are some who believe that God is cruel and capricious enough to punish babies and foreigners just for never hearing about God. If such a god exists, why should anyone worship him in the first place?

Did He ask for forgiveness and ask Jesus into his heart to help him gain the Holy Spirit ?
We cant give you that answer, for sure, hearing is not enough, he has to believe. Did he believe in Jesus ? Even secretly ? You will find out during the resurrection.
John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

I hate spelling mistakes! Aargh:)
Actually, he'd go to hell. Unless he accepted jesus as his lord and savior--since ignorance was no longer an excuse--he'd go to hell. We don't have to think about the lifetime he lived not believing this. If he got a free ticket to heaven, this would mean god would grant atheists--the kind who just can't believe in magic or supernatural events without proof--a free pass to heaven. This would render the whole salvation and supposedly dying for sins meaningless.

Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience - those too may achieve eternal salvation.
