Tough call. It's hard to say, mainly because many leaders have, throughout history, *claimed* religious purposes for wars that could very well have been (in their minds anyway) actually about greed, or territory, or power. It *is* safe to say that religion has been used to motivate people to FIGHT in more wars than anything else. That's easily shown correct. "...his master race theory was based on Darwins theory of evolution." Oh, dang, I thought you were actually asking an intelligent question, until I hit that nonsense. He didn't have a "master race theory," he had stupid ideas; and they were not based on anything from Darwin. "Iraq spread democracy ie territory..." Then why did W specifically state that "god" told him to invade Iraq? Oh, by the way -- there are many hundreds of thousands of wars other than a few recent ones. I suggest you go learn some history, you're making yourself look rather silly. Peace.

People start wars. But religion certainly plays its part, too. Religion is often used as an excuse/justification for wars. And it is used for propoganda and to boost the morale of the troops. An obvious example would be Hitler, who was a Catholic. To quote him: "I am convinced that I am acting as the agent of our Creator. By fighting off the Jews, I am doing the Lord's work." (1925) and he continued to make religious statements during the war. German infantry soldiers had "Gott mit uns" (God is with us) inscribed on their belt buckles and Nazi Germany worked closely with the Catholic Church.

"the christians started it with the crusades" - is a foolish comment considering religious wars started long before the Christian religion began.

no. some people could say it was white people, they are responsible for the most wars, slavery and colonising. Most as you see have nothing to do with religion

Britain is 75% atheist but it still went to war against Argentina and Iraq (twice).

Yea, you can wake up one day and say i'm atheist so now i can blame everything on someone else, but your white and you can't change that.

We need to stop looking at the past and looking at the world today as we can change that but we can't change history so why waste time playing the blame game about it.

Muslims are not terrorists.... as you are implying

Only ignorant fools may believe that.

It's because you’re ignorant, the ones that go by the media. You think Islaam is a bad religion, that draws people to terrorism and the likes, which is a big lie.

You clearly misunderstand the concept of Jihad and war. And you lack the true understanding and principles of Belief. You don't understand Islaam. When you are taught something, you just go by it, ignoring who said it, but just accepting it, is not good enough. False information get's put in your heads. When really you should do the research to get the information confirmed, if it's authentic or weak-this applies to Hadiths. Also with the Qur'aanic verses. You should read the best translation, which is by Muhsin Khan. http://searchtruth.com/chapter_display.p...
http://searchtruth.com/chapter_display.p...

Other translations are dodgy with errors, especially Yusuf Ali's translation. Also for Hadith, I use Muhsin Khans translation. And I'm not sure which translation is this, but it seems authentic.
http://searchtruth.com/searchhadith.php...
Also it's the media which is another big problem. As others have mentioned they brainwash everyone!

That's why you get the suicide bombers. Which is against Islaam. I've been called a terrorist by strangers. Why? Those group of Muslims who misunderstoof Jihad, and blew themselves up along of others, gave the whole Muslim nation a bad reputation. And it's the people that do not understand that this is not part of Islaam. The ignorant people, think this is what Islaam teaches. Which is false.

Jihad, often mistranslated as ‘Holy War’ (a popular phrase from the Crusades), actually means: to strive and endeavour in Allaah’s cause. Hence, jihad can be expressed in a purely peaceful way. The Prophet Muhammad had said that:
“The best jihad is by one who strives against (the evil of) his own self for Allaah, the Might and Majestic.’ (at-Tabarani)
Allaah has said:

“So obey no the disbelievers, but make a great jihad against them (by preaching) with this (Qur’aan). (Qur’aan 25:52)

As for suicide bombing, it is forbidden on a number of levels. Firstly, on the crime of suicide itself, the Prophet once warned: Indeed, whoever kills himself will certainly be punished in Hellfire, where he shall dwell in forever.’ (Bukhari & Muslim)

“And do not kill yourselves. Surely Allaah is Most Merciful unto you.” (Qur’aan 4:29)
Suicide attacks also contravene the Islamic principle which states: that which is built upon falsehood itself is falsehood. In other words, the ends cannot justify the means if those means (e.g. self-destruction) are themselves anti-Islamic. Furthermore, suicide attacks almost always result in collective punishments for the wider civilian populous, contravening yet another Islamic principle: fighting evil itself becomes evil if, as a consequence, it leads to more harm.

“And beware the affliction which affects not in particular those of you who do wrong (but may harm innocents as well): And know that Allaah is strict in punishment. (Qur’aan 8:25)

There are 72 different sects of Muslims. All of them will go to hell, except one. And that sect is the one who follows the Messenger of Allaah, and his Companions- Ahlus-Sunnah Wal Jamaa'.

The different sects have invented things into the religion, or have neglected certains things, this is what makes them leaf astray.

And You will not want to find out the truth. Download these files, and read them!

Well here, read about the Prophet Muhammad, and also about him in the Bible.

No, SIN causes more wars... like the lie you told in this "question." If you study MOST wars popularly blamed on "religion," (like the Crusades) you will learn that the religious motivation was ancillary and NOT the true cause...

People cause wars in the name of their religion. They head off to wage destruction in the name of God. But God really has nothing to do with it. What causes all these terrible and useless conflicts has more to do with man-made fanaticism than anything else. God sees past all this "glorious crusading" and "holy wars" to what is really there. Human insecurites, fears and hatred. Those concepts have nothing to do with Him.

Here we go again that favourite straw man argument of the militant atheists.People cause wars they might use religious belief to justify conflict or misuse it ( distort scripture) but that doesn't mean its the spirit of the faith. There's more evidence to support the argument that Communism causes war if you look the events of the last century.

Wars are based on greed and political motives
NONE of the major wars had religion as its pure cause.

I'm an atheist and proud of it! To me religion is a powerful way of brain washing people. None of it is substantiated and it would seem that it's all made up as it suites, especially some religions as an example: - who allow men to marry numerous women but not vise verser - emmm somewhat convenient.....who made that one up?

I'm a good person and I live my life how I want and don't answer to no mythical so called god!

true and partly true. its not religion. its those crazy people using the name of religion to kill - esp now with this jihad thingy! islam has never taught such practices and how the clergy twisted it. giving the religion a bad name. so we got to beware and be aware of the pitfalls. on our part, lets do our part - practice peace and love and if any clergy tells u that his religion is better than the other one - he's not practising true religion......discern
