Original is the hard part, with so many people getting inked these days. Go down to a tattoo shop and browse through some of the flash. When you find something you like, tell the artist that you want something drawn up like said flash, so that it is one of a kind. As for location, go for the arms. But remember, it will be on you. I just got my 13th one on Saturday, and I am far from finished.

Tattoos should be abou what you want, not whats cool, or the "if you want to be original, try not getting one" crap. If you really want one, get one. No-one can tell you what to get either. My best peice of acvice is, go to a couple of tattoo salons, look at a few different artists work, talk to them, don't be shy- "it's your skin, and it's there forever!" A good tattoo artist should be able to help you come up with something unique for you. Once you think you have the design you want, get a copy and put it on your wall or by your bed for a month or two, so you see it every morning. Also, cost should'nt be an option, as I said it's your skin, and this is forever. happy hunting! j

hmm I would design something yourself if you're looking for original. I wouldn't even necessarily look at books of tattoos...just really sit and think about what has meaning to you and what is important to you. Think about what has value in your life and what your personality and self is like. That should help you narrow it down somewhat. There are some amazing ink artists out there and I'm sure that they would be able to take your thoughts and create something great for you. :) For me, I didn't come up with my idea until I had my daughter....and even the tattoo artist I'm going to has never even heard of a design like mine...so in that sense, you can come up with something original in that way. In terms of placement, I would think of the tattoo first and then figure out the best place on your body for it. Good luck!

I cannot think of a nice original design for a tattoo, I was also confused but in the spur of the moment i liked the design of a butterfly, and i did it,years passed and am happy with it I did it on my upper thighs!so it has to be your choice because it is u who have to wear it,for it will be part of you and who knows if your choice was right, u would like to do another one as i am going to do now !!!!!!!!

I always think that a design that is personal to yourself and something that isn't going to go out of fashion like the stupid barb-wire band of the early 90's I had a tribal sun on my back which looks a bit dated now and regret to a small degree. I think words or names in Arabic or Chinese look different and definately personal. I know a guy who had every country he had visited written in ancient Egyptian hieroglphs around his arm. I think black always looks best on any skin but it has to be above the forearm and definately below the neck. Chest and breasts look ridiculous. Backs are always a safe bet as I think are upper arms and lower legs if small. Lower back sometimes looks good on girls but the popularity at the moment could cheapen the appeal. Good luck.

I think it has to be your choice i have 2 tattoos one a Dolphin coming out of the sea against the setting sun with my sons names below it that is on the top of my left arm and the other is 4 tiny cat paw prints on the top of my left leg (when i ware shorts you can see 2 so it looks like a cat has walked up my leg) i am thinking of having another one maybe on my lower back, the one thing i have found from talking to others is not many people stop at one( even my mum at 60 years old had he first 4 years ago, a rose bud on her ankle wants another one) and no i don't regret mine i had them for a reason so every time i look at them it reminds me...

Its best to get a design that means something to you, so you could either design it yourself or have a search through books and on the internet for a design you like. I got mine of an egyptian eye of horus on my ankle so can be covered up for job interviews etc. Another good place is your wrist which then can be covered up by a watch when at work/interviews etc.

I'm with Debbiecat, Alfed E Newman, Lionel W and Prickles - DON'T, REALLY REALLY DON'T. They are completely un-original, whatever design you get, and they are very tacky. Once a sign of rebellion, they are now just common as muck. Be your own person in your heart, don't try and draw who you are on your skin. You have no idea who you are going to become - we all change and develop and you can't ever be sure that something you get done now you will still like in 5, 10, or 20 years time.

Apologies to those with tattoos, I don't mean to offend, but I really don't like them. Sorry.

I can think of lots of designs, but they would most likely look best on me.

I don't know you or what you like to give you ideas. But look in google images for _____ tattoos and see if you can find things you like. If you do, print it out, redraw it and make sure you like it before you tattoo it. As far as location goes, if you want to/have to hide it, that's something to consider. Its all a very personal thing, so other people can help, but you shouldn't just do as they say.
