Maybe because you can pick stuff up and scratch with a hook and with a stump, you can't really do much of anything.

they said that when pirates cut off their limbs, they will have a certain degree of superiority and they will have a hefty amount of money. (but that amount of money is only equivalent to less than a dollar today) the more limbs you cut off, the richer you get. they just get the hook to be a substitute for the hand.

Hey Mr. L! Its Liza... =) You're extraordinarily hard to find, you know that? =P Anyway I think they use a hook to pick up stuff that's hoop-shaped, like a sewing hoop or a hula-hoop. Also you can pick up rope with it. I like Omar's idea of a jell-o hand, better, though... ^_^
