I think it's a natural part of the growing-up process for kids to want to be on their own as they near young adulthood. That's the way it's supposed to be. I know my kids love me, and they love coming home for short periods of time from college, but I also know they love being independent and living on their own, away from me. It's hard to let go sometimes.

I expect that your kids are not too much different from anyone else's. Another mom I know said that her kids get so unlikable by the time they are about 18, that must be how it's supposed to be so she can stand to see them go!

I really like my kids though, but I'm happy for them to move on with their lives. And yes, they will always come to their father and I for help when times get tough, but that's how it's supposed to be too. Family is where you can go and always know you are loved and welcome to be there.

Stick to your rules though, they will one day thank you for teaching them to be responsible.

And just think, one day they will be parents too, and then they will appreciate all that you did even more!

Hard as it is, just stick with it; eventually, if we as parents have dealt with our kids with love and respect, they'll figure it out on their own.

My parents were always there for me, even when I couldn't wait to get away from them. As an adult, even though I was far away, I started calling them weekly - and always made a point of thanking them as we were ending our talks. My dad died several years ago, but I still thank my mom before we hang up. Your kids are likely to do the same eventually; my daughter does. I'd like to think she learned it from me.

i'm not a mom, but i think my parents did a great job on raising me (lol, but seriously). they may not be perfect parents, but i love them for their imperfections as well as perfections. so u moms and dads out there, if ur kids never say thanks and how great you guys are, well let ME say it for them. u guys are great! thanks for everything!
