Evenly wipe the whole cast iron pan with vegetable oil or shortening and bake it at 400 degrees for about a 1/2 hour.

If you just bought it new and it is cast iron, scrub it well with steel wool until it is clean.
Best way is in the oven: Heat the oven to 400. After washing the pan, put it in the oven for about 1/2 hour. Carefully take it out, pour 1T vegetable oil into the pan and rub it around with a paper towel to coat the entire inside of the pan. There should NOT be oil pooled in any areas. Remove that with a paper towel, and be careful not to burn yourself.
Put the oiled pan back into the oven for another half hour. Put more oil around the pan again, and put back into the oven for another half hour.
Turn off the oven, and let the pan sit in the oven until completely cooled.
Don't scrub this pan anymore. Don't let it stand in water or soak for any length of time. This will ruin the work you have done.
NOW, if you are talking about a tinned steel baking pan, I would recommend doing the same thing.

It depends on what the pan is made from. Stainless steel can't be seasoned, because it's too hard.
To season an aluminum pan:
1. Wash the pan with soup and water using a sponge or cloth (no steel sponge). Rinse and dry thoroughly.
2. Heat the pan until hot then add two ounces of oil to the pan. Carefully swirl the pan so the oil coats every part of the pan.
3. Let the pan cool then remove the oil and repeat the process one more time.
To season cast Iron:
1.For cast iron the process is similar, but because of the nature of the metal you’ll heat the pans to a much higher temperature. First wash the pan with soup and water then dry thoroughly. Heat the pan up until it is very hot. Add two ounces of oil and swirl to coat all sides. Let cool and remove excess oil. Heat the pan up again until it begins to smoke. Add more oil and repeat the process until you’ve done this three times.
Never use soap to clean a seasoned pan. Wash with warm water and dry with a paper towel. If some food does stick us a little salt with oil and a paper towel to remove it.

a cast iron pan? I have heard that you wipe it with oil inside and out and bake it in a 400 degree oven for 4 hours. Turn the oven off and let the pan sit inside until it is cool. Remember never wash cast iron with soap!

If it's a cast iron frying pan, fry up some bacon in it. Anything else, rub bacon grease or lard on it. Bacon grease or lard -- hard on the arteries but great for cast iron or Mexican food.
