if you are using a light paint you can always paint the ceiling to make it appear higher. If your paint is dark, dont paint the ceiling the same or you will feel boxed in. Paint it a lighter shade. Also applying crown molding with lights behind them gives the overall appearance of higher ceilings. See the home depot book home improvement 123 for info on that.

Paint the ceiling white. Paint the surrounding walls a light neutral tint depending on personal preference (oyster-shell, off white to slightly bluish, yellowish, beigish tint but keep it light). You are keeping the walls just a bit darker so upon entering the room the eye is almost unconciously drawn upward to the lighter shade of the ceiling. Don't have a lot of color going on; this will close in. Window treatments should complement the wall color to give the fluid illusion of height--nothing to break up the view or distract from floor to ceiling. Also another trick to give the illusion of height, try a neutral window treatment/fabric design with subtle vertical stripes (again pulling the eye up and down/length) or narrow framed pictures or displays on the wall (once again pulling the eye and playing up length).

Try a light colour on the ceiling. Also you could get blinds or curtains that run right from the top of the wall to the bottom to give the ceiling a higher look, and could try vertical stripes too, on the wall or on the curtains to make the walls look longer. Stay away from dark colours on the walls, this will make the room look smaller

any pattern whatsoever will make your ceiling appear lower even embossed paper painted white ,so if you have anything on it strip it of and get the ceiling plastered and paint it white .
patterned walls crowd a room and make it seem smaller so the same thing applies , paint the walls cream to separate them from the ceiling ,
laminate flooring and neutral furniture also increase the sense of space .
the secret to all this is improving the effect of natural light , the lighter things are the more sunlight is reflected around the room . hope this helps good luck .

Two ways depending on your do it yourself knowledge.
Screw drywall board on ceiling 12" from wall around your room. Use trim to cover edges, Paint dry board a shade darker then center or old ceiling. This will make room taller.
Second, place trim around ceiling edges at a 45. This will make room a little taller.

The best way to make your ceiling look higher is to do a little trick I like to call "lower your floor".

A ceiling that is painted white w/ dark color walls will add height. Also, if you have fake beams (not intended for structural support) on the ceiling, remove them.

Darker walls, light color on the ceiling w/crown molding on the floor. Mirrors and tall skinny plants help too!
