Battle of Wits

John and Mary were playing at Patball, an outdoor game of their own invention. In skill, there was nothing to choose between them.
They were playing to 21 points.
Mary had the sun in her face. "Look here, John," she said, "with the sun where it is now you're scoring about 3 points to my one, I ought to have a handicap."
"Okay," John said. "Or why not change over at half time? Say when I've scored ten points."
"Right," said Mary. She considered. "After all, John, you did win the toss. Let's change over when you've scored 12."
"A generous offer," said John. "I'll accept it, all the same?"
What should be the result of the game?

Mary could still lose, depending on how long the game takes. If they switch over at "half time" the sun could still be in her face because after noon, it starts shining in the other direction. the result of the game could be that John scores his 21 to win while Mary still has only 7 points.

Half time is actually not when John have 12 points but he is obviously caught by what look like a good proposition. The final score will be John 18, Mary 21 (and she will go on to score the 22nd point as well before john will score another point but it is already game over by then)

When John has 12 points, Mary has scored 4 points = Total 16 points (Mary's "generous offer)
Final score gives a total of 39 points which implies that the half time score should have a total of 20 points = John 15,Mary 5
They would have been tide at 20 all if that was used as the half time score but the result would still have been John 21,Mary 23 (winner usually must be 2 points ahead to win)

It could go either way, of course, but Mary should win. When John gets 12 points, he switches and is facing the sun, and Mary never said SHE would switch at 12 points, so she can score all of her 21 points while John faces the sun.

I believe that if everything stayed the same, Mary would win 22 - 18.

However, she may just be a horrible player who was using the sun as an excuse. Or John could secretly be an Olympic Medal Winner and is hustling her. Or John is a cheater. Or Mary is a cheater. Or John has a heart attack and they never finish the game. Or a hurricane hits. Or the sun goes behind a cloud and Mary creams him before he gets to 12 to change sides.....
