I've heard of friends becoming lovers and sometimes more. I just wonder how, though. Personally, I've never been sexually attracted to a platonic friend, and they're typically just platonic friends because of the fact that I'm not physically attracted to them. However, I once actually had a friend who fell in love with me, but it wasn't reciprocated. If anything, I sort of think of my platonic friends the same way I do my relatives, and I've got some pretty attractive cousins, but I would still not want to date any of them. Does anybody have any insight here?

You can't make yourself be attracted to them. This happens to alot of people. It is just one of those things. You know they are cute but you are not interested in dating them, they are just your friend. Then one day you confide something in them where you possibly cry and they are the shoulder you lean on. Then all of a sudden you realize that they are very attractive and they know your most intimate thoughts and feelings. They know you as well as you know yourself, and you know them just as well as they know you and now when you are alone sitting close to him/her your heart beats a little faster and you are a little nervous and you have the urge to lean in and kiss them but you resist thinking what if he/she doesn't like me that way. So you tell them how you feel in hopes that it won't change anything or that they feel the same way.

Why do people become friends? Probably because they share something or just find each other interesting. Isn't that one of the most common reasons why people date, too? I have talked to two couples that started out as friends and both told me the same thing. They think the timing just wasn't right. When they were both free from other relationships, they fell in love and have a very strong relationship.
I don't know what kind of friends you have, but they are obviously nothing like the kind of men that you are attracted to.

I think one day the person just realizes what an amazing person their friend is. Maybe they're having no luck in the dating world and they realize that everything they're looking for is right in front of them.

Sometimes it's all in your mind.. You set your mind that your relationship is just platonic.
