Hi, I got a puppy weimeriner and he's 3 months old & I try to take him outside for the bathroom like the book says when he wakes up & he's done playing & about 20 mins after he eats. Okay, I was taking him out like every hour and I personally think that's too much and wanted to try to make it longer between outside times like every 2 hours, but when I wait he then goes pee in the house. Is it normal for a 3 month old puppy to have to go out every hour or should I keep trying to train him to wait every 2 hours, because while I'm at work & when he's in his cage he is very good about not going and that's about 9 hours and then at night time too, he holds it for about 6-7 hours. He has had his occasional pee accident in the cage over night, but not too often.

Also about how long does it usually take for him to be potty trained so I don't have to put him in the cage anymore, because I do not like having to do that to him.

Thanks!

At 3 months, your puppy is still very much a baby. Sometimes with larger dogs, it's easy to forget just how young they are. If your puppy needs to go out every hour....then take him out every hour. Instead of increasing the time by an hour...try increasing it by 5 - 15 minutes.

Keep in mind that most dogs sleep while in their kennel...so it's easier not to go to the bathroom. People do this too. Most people use the restroom every 4 hours and yet you can sleep 8 - 10 hours without waking up.

Most dogs reach their full maturity around the age of 2. I understand that you don't like putting your puppy in it's kennel (I cringe at the word "cage"...lol), Remember that you're not only doing it to housebreak your puppy, but also for your pups safety when you can't give him 100% of your attention. I continue to use a kennel at least until my pups are 2 years old...which is usually when I know they are comfortable in the home alone and I don't have to worry about them getting into things or being destructive out of boredom or missing me. Most of my dogs prefer to continue using their kennels their whole lives...it's their "room".

Weimaraner is the correct spelling.
At 12 weeks your pup needs to be out about every hour maybe more often. He will need to be out like this for another month or so. When you try to incerase the time do it by a few minutes not a hour at a time. Puppys are babies and they need constant care.
I do not sit down for about 5 months when I have a puppy in the house.
Using the crate is good for the dog. I have one Weim that is nine and he still has his crate. He sleeps in it all the time. I leave the door open for him and his bed in it. He can come a go as he pleases. He is not shut in it anymore. But he was when I left until he was about 2. I knew he was not getting into anything that could hurt him or eating the house or doing anything bad. He was safe all the time I was at work. Now I work from the house so he is loose all the time and he does not chew or do anything he is not supposed to.

Why have a puppy if he spends most of his time confined while you are out? It is a vital stage in his development for socialisation both of people and objects. Make sure you do this thoroughly, or you will end up with a problem dog once he hits the 'teenage' stage.

Potty training varies. One of mine housebroke in a week, but it can take anywhere from that to 6 - 8 months old. Don't forget the chewing aspect - even if he's not peeing on the floor during the day, he may make his own fun destroying your belongings.
