And will the quality, or most importantly, the edibility of the fruit be compromised if left out of the fridge?

I do both. Usually I go through lemons so fast that I leave them on the counter in a basket. But if I picked up a ton of them on sale at the store, then they go in the fridge. Limes always go in the fridge since it seems that they start turning brown really fast anyway.

I love lemons, and I've never noticed a difference in quality either with the zest or juice.

If you store them in the fridge they don't keep ripening as fast as they would on the counter.Either way as long as you eat or use them before they get too soft the quality should be fine.I actually keep limes in my freezer and just microwave them for 20-30 sec whenever I need one.
