This is known as 'The Falling Dream'. There is no cause for this dream, at some point in most people's lives they will have it. It is known that if at some point in the dream you hit the ground, you die in your sleep, whether this is true or not I'm not sure. I'd say it was because your body is warning you of something. Most times when people tell me that they have experience the dream, they have woken up and felt sick, or needed to go to the toilet, but you are in such a deep sleep this is the only way.

Hello,
(ANS) This is called "lucid dreaming" or "waking dreaming", its when the dream experience is so intense it seems utterly real. Yet at some level you know your still asleep & dreaming.
*And YES! you can have the real experience of falling,I've certainly had the experience of flying & feeling as light as a feather.
*Falling is sometimes associated with the letting go of both mind & body into deep sleep such as REM sleep states (rapid eye movement sleep which is most associated with dreaming).
**The actual sensation of falling within the dream isnt anything to get actually worried about but its more symbolic of what the dream is about. What this falling is telling you? it could be a sign to you that you need to let go of something in your life, or within an imporant relationship, or that you have now let go?

Not strange. I have a dream where I'm about seven and I fall off my bike onto my chin while having a real-life falling sensation. I read once that it's because part of your brain is shutting down for the night before the rest of it. It's just a second, but it's enough to freak you out and jerk you awake. edit: the answer above me was great. I love it. As a side note, my sister has had several versions of the falling dreams. (I think they are your brain's version of a practical joke or some way to justify the feeling.) One of her dreams was that she stepped on our brother's head and it rolled under her foot and she fell. Sometimes she'd fall off a waterfall. Mine is always the same. XD

I guess it is not uncommon for one to dream that. I have many times and like yourself I always wake up before I hit the ground. I am sure there is a message in there somewhere, but my survival instincts keep me safe and will not allow me to hit the ground..

I have never hit the floor either how strange is that and it does happen a lot,
I got told that if you hit the floor your dead in real life too. but its probably not true.
I also read that if you see your own face in a dream you will wake up immediately due to the fact that your brain gets a shock or something.

I've always been told that if you hit the ground you die. I used to have these dreams and always woke up before I hit the ground.

I hit the ground over 172 years ago, and have been dead ever since. Its massively overrated.
Keep waking cos being dead is a bummer, no one ever comes to visit
Its actually your blood pressure stabilising as you wake up.
