Before a diagnosis can be made it must be established whether the hair of the dog is falling out. The alternative is the dog is scratching and causing the hair to fall out. This means that there is an underlying cause of the itching. It may be caused by an allergy, a parasite or a skin infection. Many diseases and conditions are associated with hair cycle abnormalities. These include endocrinal diseases such as hypothyroidism and Cushing’s syndrome, alopecia X, cyclic flank alopecia, pattern baldness, post-clipping alopecia, and telogenic defluxion. Hair loss under collar When a dog’s hair keeps getting caught in the collar they will lose it. A change of collar is all that is needed. However hair rubbing under a collar can be an early warning sign of disease in some dogs.

I have a female staffy who is 5. When she was around 1 her hair fell out in a patch on her right side. We took her to the vet who ran many tests to no avail. As she has got older each year around the same time she has the same problem only it has got gradually worse - larger area and both sides. We have had alot more tests which have really not given us any answers. Our vet did say that staffies are prone to alot of skin problems though. So if this sounds familiar to you try not to worry, ours really doesn't seem bothered at all when this happens. Her hair grows back in after a few weeks. I would still get it checked if it persists though, hopefully you will get more answers than we did! Good luck.

There could be several reasons why a dog loses hair. To mention a few: allergy, fungus, mange, fleas, lice, thyroid .....best thing to take it to the vet, and get a skin scraping first. If nothing shows up, then have blood work done.
The vet will advise on the proper treatment. Also buy a medical or Iodine shampoo to relieve any itching/burning.
Take it to the vet as soon as possible to avoid any secondary skin infection.

Some thyroid disorders can be cured, but many require lifetime treatment. Learn here https://tr.im/Yv6Wr
For example, sometimes early stage thyroid cancer can be cured by surgery to remove the thyroid gland, but you will need to take thyroid hormone medication afterwards for the rest of your life. Goiters can also be surgically removed and do not always recur after surgery. In most cases, thyroid disorders need treatment over a lifetime. However, with treatment most people with thyroid disorders can live normal, healthy lives.
