I have a coworker who has told me he chooses not to have children because he doesn't want them in his home. At the same time, he claims that he would have superb parenting skills if he were a parent. Then he berates his brothers as being terrible parents.

I've told him I think it would be pretty hard for a father to screw up a child. Half the time, the kid is just worried about playtime and Mommy. As long as Dad is not abusive or drunk, and he sticks around when he can, I don't think the kid will be screwed up. My coworker insists fathers have to nurture kids by example. Who is right?

If a father/mother doesn't set a good example for children, the children can be messed up BIG TIME! Children are born knowing NOTHING and learn by example(nurturing from the mother and father). If they aren't taught to be good, it takes a lot of work on their part for them to learn to be good. Your friend is right and is smart not to have children if he doesn't want to chance messing them up.

Fathers have a major impact on their children. Sons need to see first from dad what being a man is and daughters need to learn from dad what they will want in a husband. If he is not loving, that sends a message. If he is not committed to the family, that sends a message. If he is not actively showing love to his wife, that sends a message. None of those messages are positive.
Dads need to guide their kids to grow up to be people of godly character.
