I've been on a healthy eating plan and exercise routine for almost a month now. I always hear about people losing 4, 5, 6 pounds a week and I didn't want to do that because I want to be able to maintain my weight loss. My weight loss last week was 0.4 pounds and this week was 1.2 pounds. Thing is, I am losing quite a few inches each week. This past week I lost 4.5". 3.75 of those inches were from my hips, waist and abdomen.

I started out at 179 lbs and I am now at 172.6. I am walking 4 days a week doing half hour/2 miles of Walk Away The Pounds. I am also doing The Firm (lifting weights) 3 days a week. I am eating around 1800 calories a day.

People keep telling me that I should stick below 1300 calories a day but my concern is muscle loss. I want to keep any muscle mass and I want to build more. If I am losing inches quicker than pounds, am I doing the right thing?

Thanks!

Yes! The fact you are losing inches and not so much weight is good. It means you are successfully transferring fat to muscle. Fat weighs less than muscle (not technically, but the same space it takes for x-amount of fat to lie on your body will weigh more if you replace it with the same x-amount of muscle) Sounds like you are doing terrific and yes, do not go under 1300 calories. You want to have enough to sustain you through your workouts, the more energy you use, the more calories it will take. Keep on doing what you're doing...GOOD LUCK!!

It sounds like you are building lean muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat, so your measurements change more than your weight. Your caloric intake seem fine for your weight. If you don't take in enough calories, your body will think there's a famine and you won't lose. Go by looks more than numbers. There are several sites that can help you determine how much of what to do or eat.
