I tried when she was a kitten but she just wouldn't do it. I gave up and taped it open for her (I know, this was probably a bad idea, but I have a bad back and couldn't keep bending down to teach her how to go through.) Now the weather is so cold that I want to close the flap and teach her to use it properly. I have thrown treats through it, gone round the other side and tried to coax her through with treats or toys, shown her how it can be pushed open, tried holding her and leading her through, but she just struggles and is scared. What else can I do?! I can't understand why she can't learn this! She's very intelligent in other ways. I am trying leaving it closed now, hoping that necessity will be the master of invention, but it makes me so upset seeing her looking longingly outside and not able to get out. I don't know how long I can harden my heart for!

If she really wants to go outside, she'll figure it out. If you go outside and call to come to you with a treat and open the flap for her, maybe that would encourage her to come out. Our cat figured out her cat door after a week of continued coaxing. She often would just not push it hard enough to open it...just took practice. However...it did mean getting on the floor and working with her. Is there someone else in the house that can help you?
Good luck.

we've carried out this numerous situations even nevertheless the older one grow to be constantly some months previous - no longer 18. ensure the present cat is contained in the room and comfortable. Then convey contained in the kitten in a provider that that's seen in, positioned it on the floor and enable the older one take it from there. it would take a whilst so which you have have been given to maintain them in diverse rooms for a whilst and introduce the kitten slowly. all of them look to have diverse reactions to a clean cat yet because it is so youthful you in all danger won't have any issues. The older cats have constantly ended up loving the recent one. good success

If the flap is a hard solid piece instead of flexible vinyl your cat may be exercising good sense. My cat changed his mind when going through the door and got his paw trapped and badly pinched by pulling in the wrong direction. Try replacing the door with a piece of blanket cut to the right size.

Try putting her on the outside, she will use it when she wants to come in. I have a 9 pound cat that pushes through the same dog door his english mastiff brother and sister use.

put some food on the outside of the catflap. then get your cat on the inside and guide her through it. then do it again but the other side so she knows how to come back in. do this twice a day for a week and if that doesn't work then i can't help you

Rub catnip on the flap and she will learn to love it. When she rubs up against the catnip the flap will open and that will leave a positive impression.

Maybe the cat just does not want to go outside.
Don't try to force her out...if she really wants to go outside she'll figure it out.

Frankly I think she's one smart cat for not wanting to go outside.
There is no reason that a cat needs to go outside.
