"Steer in the direction on the skid":
This is good advice, but most people have trouble figuring out what it means, especially when the vehicle is skidding! A better way to think of it is: point your front wheels in the direction you want the car to go.
While both mean the exact same thing, it is easier to react when you do not have to try to think which way the skid is going!

Same as with any slick surface.
If it's truly out of control...nothing.
Otherwise, you turn into the direction of the skid, keeping gently (GENTLY) on the gas. This is the only way you'll get the car moving in the direction that it's actually pointing again, apart from stopping and starting again. But if you're skidding, braking is just going to make it worse.
You always steer in the direction you want the car to be pointing.

Steer in the direction of the front end of the car, take foot off the gas and keep feet off the brake. Car will slow down on its own, when it becomes steerable, steer it onto clear roadway. Keep feet off of the gas, tires are full of diesel and will just spin, braking will lock the wheels and you will spin endlessly.

Do as suggested by others and slowly remove foot from gas. Steer in the direction of the skid LOOK WHERE YOU WANT TO GO [VERY INPORTANT] If you know how to threshold brake do so [non ABS]. If you know how to use your ABS slam your pedal and steer and look.
