I personally don't believe that organic food is a sham. Organic foods are grown in ways that don't harm the environment, and are much better for you. In my family I have had several experiences with relatives and cancer, and have done a lot of research, and have read a lot about the pros of organic foods in preventing cancer and other diseases.
One of the main reasons people choose organic is the free of pesticides aspect. Pestcides are formulated to kill insects, so they most likely are going to be doing some harm in our bodies.
Other reasons people choose organic is because most organic food is free of preservatives, GMOs (genetically modified organisms), bioengineered plants, trans fats, and are locally grown, eliminating a lot of pollution from shipping.
The cons of organic foods are, obviously, the cost, and the shorter shelf life due to the no preservatives aspect.
To buy orgainic food or not is up to you, I personally think the pros outweigh the cons, organic food is less harmful to the environment, more norishing to our bodies, and often tastes better than the over-processed foods I would be eating otherwise. It is hard to buy a 3 dollar bag of 6 all natural cookies when the normal ones are half as much for about three times as many cookies, but when I think about the difference it will make in my body, I'll usually take the more wholesome choice. But I have to admit there are the times when I can't resist a good normal chocolatey brownie with my morning coffee!

I used to work in the produce department of a wal-mart, and the department lead explained to me that the biggest difference was that organic foods are not treated with chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, preservatives, etc.) The price is so much more because in an organic farm, less of the crop makes it all the way, and the shelf life is shorter.
There isn't much of a difference in taste, but having the assurance that things haven't been treated with chemicals does matter to some people.

He does not have to worry! The organic food industry will never take over the world. It is a niche market and will probably never exceed 10% of the market share in the US. Don't get me wrong, I think people should have the right to choose the type of food they wish to eat. And be guaranteed access to it. Even have the government oversee and fund, to ensure this. But respect the right of others. If given a choice with 2 bowls of cereal already in front of them to pick from, one organic, the other not labeled. Most poeple will choose the organic. Studies have shown that the average person is willing to pay a little more for the organic goods Also more for eco-, farm labor-, local-friendly goods. However if the organic is 20+% more expensive, they will often just go with the cheaper non-labled product to save money. Your brother is a conspiracy theorist. Just tell him that many of the things he eats are already organic but not necessarily labeled as such. And just about everthing humans eat are organic, otherwise they would be inorganic! [A chemist's humor] He might meet a hot looking lady in the future. He really likes her. When he finds out she is into the organic lifestyle. Do you think he will convert?

Organic food is better for you. It is better for the world. But best of all, it tastes about a hundred times better than non-organic food.

Its not so much that the food is better for you. Its that the production of the food is better for the environment.
