They are beautiful, affectionate little dogs. Great for families and kids, however they often snore, are prone to severe breathing problems, eye problems, and if you don't closely monitor their food they can become obese very quickly which can lead to heart problems.
Do NOT get a pug from a pet shop, as these are normally the "rejects" from breeders, or even worse, are backyard bred and have many many more health problems than a pug chosen from a breeder. (Anyway, it's surprising to find that a lot of pure bred animals are actually CHEAPER when purchased from breeders).
When buying a pug from a breeder always ask to see the parents and the other pups from the same litter, and ask to see the health records and scores for the parents.

A friend of mine had a pug and "Buddy" was one of the coolest dogs I've ever been around. Great personality, great temperment and very loyal. He was a lot of fun during playtime and a loving companion during down time. For the most part, I've heard a lot of good things about the breed.
