While Deism doesn't carry the intellectual dishonesty or questionable ethical baggage that most religions do, it still is a "God of the Gaps" philosophy.

Scientific materialism cannot fill in those gaps, and likely never will (since every new discovery opens more questions). But any time you assert there was a God responsible for a phenomenon, you are cutting off the search for the natural cause of that same phenomenon.

It never died. Nowadays it might be called "philosophical theism." It's actually the predominant theology in mainline Protestantism, via process theology. It was always strong among Unitarians as well.

It would be a step in the right direction. I can accept belief in deities but not in a load of meaningless religious dogma.
