They usually have contracts set up with scrap dealers in each major geographical area - it's easier than trying to chase down payment from an individual, and they get "guaranteed" purchase.

IE, one junk dealer agrees to buy ALL scrap cars, regardless, at a pre-specified weight - $50 per ton or some such, for an entire year.

if there is available salvage items, they will inform you. You should contact the claims/ recovery department and ask if you can join the bidding for any item available.

just ask them or find out who they deal with i.e. scrap merchants
