I brought a new ragdoll kitten home on Saturday (20th) afternoon. He has is still a bit wary and jumpy, but on the whole has settled in quite well. He hardly ate for the first 24 hours he was here and to my knowledge has not drunk any water yet, even though he knows where it is. He finally used the litter tray on Sunday (21st) night - and he peed a LOT then. He's used it again since but has yet to produce anything - ahem!- solid. He goes and sits in the tray and does all the usual scratching etc, but then he starts making soft mewing noises and then just gets up and walks off. And as of today (22nd) he has not achieved anything!
Is he constipated from not drinking enough and if so, how can i get him to drink more?

PS: There is "Royal Canin" dry food left out for him (and a bowl of water) and he has a kitten wet food pouch morning and evening. He is 5 months old.

My wife, the registered vet tech, says that absence of stool is not as goood an indicator of constipation as would be the cat going into the pan, straining, and producing nothing. After all, he may have found a convenient potted plant or other secluded place to do his business. Always make sure the drinking water is fresh daily, or he may not drink it, and if you observe the cat straining in vain to produce pooh, the simple treatment frequently used is to mix a tablespoon or two of mineral oil into the cat's food dish.

The kitten maybe still getting used to his new home, BUT if he doesn't go within the next 12 hours you really should take him to the Vet.
Being unable to deficate is nothing to mess around with.

Don't give him milk, most cats are lactose intolorant and will make them sick.

It may be because it is a new environment for him he may be a little stressed and this will pass.alternitively if you have changed his food to what the breeder/previous owner was giving him then its almost certainly the reason for her runny bottom.if you have get some of the previous food and mix it with the new food that should help.good luck

Hi there...generally with most new arrivals cats tend to be still adjusting to their new environment and need a little time. When kittens are not eating and active as much they may not defecate up to 3 days. If he hasn't defecated by tomorrow you need to contact a veterinarian to discuss why he isn't able to pass and if a visit is merited.

Consider feeding him with wet food to see if this will encourage him to eat more as this provides extra hydration/moisture and he may have a bowel movement this evening.
