A sick child cannot give a dog distemper and a dog cannot give distemper to a child. Dogs should be vaccinated for distemper. It is a highly contagious yet preventable disease. Talk to you vet and make sure your dog has the appropriate vaccinations.

Distemper is an airborne virus (like the flu). It is not necessary for a dog to be around another dog to get distemper. Younger dogs are more likely to get it because their immune system is not fully developed. Distemper can also be passed down from the mother to her pups.
