In answering this question I am assuming that you are Christian and that we are using the Bible is the final and Absolute reference.

In Deut 18 verses 9 - 14 we are given clear instructions on what we are or are not to do. In this we find that:
Deuteronomy 18:9-14 MKJV
(9) When you come to the land which Jehovah your God gives you, you shall not learn to do according to the abominations of those nations.
(10) There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that uses divination, an observer of clouds, or a fortune-teller, or a witch,
(11) or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or one who calls to the dead.
(12) For all that do these things are an abomination to Jehovah. And because of these abominations Jehovah your God drives them out from before you.
(13) You shall be perfect with Jehovah your God.
(14) For these nations whom you shall possess listened to observers of clouds and to diviners. But as for you, Jehovah your God has not allowed you to do so.

It is based on this that contacting the dead is a sin. In Hebrews 9v27 it tells us that we are given once to die and then the judgement.

What I believe is the understanding is that all these practises try to usurp the authority and take the place of God. As such we fnd that they break the foundation of God's Laws which are found in Exodus 20.

In addition it shows a lack of faith in the Lord and anything that is "not faith is sin" Romans 14:23

So simply put it is sin becuase God said so directly and indirectly.

Be blessed!

According to most Churches, trying to contact the dead is a sin for two big reasons.

First, its an attempt to usurp the power of God. The dead belong to God and trying to contact them is an attempt to bypass his authority.

Second, most churches believe that Satan is behind witchcraft and such paranormal activity as seances and such. According to this belief, you don't really speak to the dead, but are being fooled by a demon or other minion of hell.

Personally, I would advise against trying to contact the dead, even without a religious prohibition. Mediums and psychics are scam artists and liars out to take your money and leave you with false hope. Their "accuracy" in answering is a parlor trick.

According to scriptures contacting the dead is possible and not a trick of a demon per se. For example; Saul, King of Israel went to the woman with a familiar spirit to contact Samuel for him. The woman was able to make contact with Samuel so that Saul could talk with him and it was not a trick.

So one can contact a dead person scripturally. People who are saying it's devils tricking a person need to read their scriptures more and stop listening to people and traditions that don't agree with scripture.

You can read about this incident in 1 Samuel chapter 28

1Sa 28:15 And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.

This is when Saul was talking with Samuel who was dead. For more detail read the chapter.

Now, in order to answer your question, we have to establish first what sin is. According to scripture

1Jo 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Sin is transgressing (breaking) the law of God (Yahuweh). Yah commanded us not to contact the dead. Therefore, it is a sin because you have broken / transgressed the commandment of Yah (the Law).

Who told you it's a sin? It's a serious matter, true enough. King Saul contacted the spirit of Samuel and he had the nerve to ask,"Why have you disturbed my rest?" There's also the small problem of imps providing false information. Play with a Ouija board or watch John Edwards' TV show for more info.

iT'S NOT A SIN TO CONTACT THE DEAD. U CAN CONTACT THE DEAD WHEN U THINK ABOUT THEM . THEY ARE UP THERE FEELING YOU , KNOWING THAT YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT THEM. YOU ARE ALSO CONTACTING THEM BY TALKING ABOUT THEM. BUT DON'T USE MAGIC AS IT IS USELESS TO CONTACT THE DEAD BECAUSE THE DEAD DON'T COME TO EARTH ONCE MORE. THEY ARE UP THERE WAITING FOR JUDGEMENT TO COME.
ASK A PRIEST ABOUT CONTACTING THE DEAD YOU WILL GET MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS.
GOOD LUCK

According to the bible, the dead are asleep and have no knowledge - so it isn't a sin per se, just pointless....
