if you look at a woman's ring finger you will, usually, see the wedding band closer to the finger and then the engagement ring.
why is this?
shouldn't it be the engagement ring and THEN the wedding band, since that's the order in which you receive them??
thanks!

what i mean, is there a logical explanation or is it that way "just b/c"??
thanks!

All the above answers are logical.
However, I have always thought that the wedding ring is the ring that always stays on your finger and the engagement ring is sometimes taken off to avoid scratching babies, or damaging it when washing up or gardening or something.
Just a thought.

It's probably practicality and for aesthetic value- if you think about it, the engagement ring usually have a diamond or some other stone, so it would look funny and fit funny if it was put on before the wedding band.
some women I know don't even wear wedding bands cos of the shape and design of their engagement rings: they wont fit next to a wedding band. I guess you could do it the other way round if you wanted to :)

I've always went against tradition, they say to wear the wedding band first because its closest to the heart, but I'm also a little old fashioned, my engagement ring (or wedding band) for that matter has never been off my finger, not since he put it on me, and I wasn't taking it off the day of our wedding... its the ring he gave me first, why take it off?

When I got married I left my engagement ring on and put my wedding band on top. I agree it makes no sense to take the engagement ring off to put the wedding band on. I didn't even realize I was going against tradition. I figure to that if one is going to fall off it might as well be the cheaper one.

Your wedding ring always goes closest to your heart ... cause they say there is a vein ran straight from your heart to your ring finger on your left hand. and your engagement ring goes to the outside. you're putting the more important of the two closest to your heart, again the vein thing lol ....so i have been told

i think it is tradition that stems from something like this. The engagement ring is worn first to show the commitment. then the wedding band is placed behind it or closer to the palm of your hand so that it is closer to your heart. i know it sounds cheesy but i think that has something to do with it....

I always thought that myself. And I agree with you. But I have no idea what's the explanation. My wedding ring is interlocking so I didn't have to worry about ring and band.

No logical reason..just its a tradition..its whats always been done because the band should be closer to your heart..
But no reason otherwise you wouldnt see the women who just wear the band or whatever

the wedding band is wore first, on the inside, because it was beleived in medieval times that there was an artery (vein artery, not sure which) in this finger that led straight to the heart. so it's worn first to be closest to the heart. then the engagemnt ring is worn on the outside, as remembrance.
