Spanking should NOT be against the law. Abusing your child, or endangering your child already is. Spanking is not abuse, or endangerment. Of course, spanking your child 50 times in one sitting is probably abuse, but then, it falls under abuse instead of spanking.

Remember when you were a child...the best learning method is through pain (I'm not talking about torture). How did we learn that the stove isn't something to touch? We touched it, it was hot, it was painfull, it was bad to touch. A spank is a quick and easy lesson as to what happens when we do something naughty. It's an attention getter, it's a reality check.

Children have a short attention span and don't understand everything that is spoken to them. A parent can tell a child "no" or "don't do that" etc, but the child cannot rationalize why. But they can understand that they just got spanked for something, and it hurt, and they don't want to be spanked again. They will eventually figure out what got them spanked, and will try not to do it again.

Spanking is a parenting tool, and in the long run, it's for the childs' own good. Whether is to prevent a dangerous action, or if it is to respect the parent/adult.

Generally speaking, the kids of "today" lack respect, especially compared to the kids of "yesterday".

There's always pros and cons to everything. Are there other methods, sure, but the law has no place in governing how a parent should discipline their child.

Should the law govern when we brush our childs teeth?

No way! Theres nothing wrong with the occasional smack on the bottom. I used to get it with the wooden spoon. Ive never had to actually spank my daughter but the threat still works. And my 2 yr old has gotten a few smacks from time to time. We're told how we can and can not do everything else, the law should stay out of how we raise our kids if were doing a good job. Theres a huge difference between a spanking and a beating. If someone needs to use another object besides their hand to disapline their child then thats wrong.

AMEN to...
NO
Absolutely not! The government has no business telling parents how to raise their kids!
This is just over stepping the boundaries. And where will it stop?
I feel that making a law of such will just open the door for all sorts of interference into people's personal lives and child rearing (further than what is already there). Plus, like was already stated...look at how "bad" life and crimes are compared to the past.. and there is less respect and self control..
Lets really stop and think....

And the backing to it makes no sense- I was spanked (with wooden spoon and all) when I was a child... I did not go out and commit violence because of it.

Violence doesn't breed violence- Ignorance does!

Well i say no, but i can tell ya the reason why they put that law out. They put that law out because there was and still alot of parents out there abusing the situation. There is parents out there basically using spanking as abuse. that's why they put that law out. but it doesn't matter anyways because they are still doing the abuse. and I am all against the abuse. I think people should not been parents at all if they are going to treat kids like that.

absolutley not. there's nothing wrong with an occasional spanking to let the child know they did something not tolerable and to show them some respect. I was spanked as a child and yes I did spank my children on occasion. beatings and spankings are 2 different things. a spanking should be on the butt and not cause any bruising. it shoud not be prolonged and not real painful. a lot of time a spanking is no more than an attention getter. the government should not get involved in raising children unless the child is beaten and bruised or molested.

Absolutely not. Spanking needs to be done by every parent to ensure that their children are respectful and disciplined. Only use spankings as a last resort. Try speaking to children first and letting them know verbally what is it that they have done wrong. Then and only then if this method is not working should spankings be used.

No. Spanking on the rear or a slap on the hand should not be illegal. Beating a child should be illegal. If you try to just talk to a child, they don't comprehend things like adults. People have spanked their children for hundreds of years, and those children turned out just fine. I don't understand why it's such an issue now.

While I never have nor will I ever state where I stand on spanking in the answer boards. I do not agree with the government deciding how we should disipline our children.

No, it shouldn't. Look at what's happened to the children since parents can no longer discipline: they are manipulative and out of control, going into schools shooting up the place. Abuse is unacceptable, spanking is NOT abuse..it is discipline!!!!! Everyone needs to mind their own business and let these parents do their jobs!! It's these people that are the first to complain when a child violates their rights, then goes and blames it on the parent...HELLO!!!!! Ya can't have it both ways! Thanks for letting me vent! I needed that! heheh!
