Should we try a Hostel, Backpackers, B&B or are the hotels inexpensive?

For Venice I would not stay directly in Venice if you are wanting to save a few bucks. The hotels in Vicenza are much less expensive than those in Venice. I think it is 50 minutes away from Venice by train.

I did spend a few nights in Florence in a Villa called "Park Palace", It is about a 15 minute walk to the center of Florence but there are two buses (#12 and #13) that run right in front of it and take you all through Florence.

Rome, I dunno. I have never stayed over there. I am sure you can find something relatively inexpensive.

If you are backpacking it you can make great use of the train system in Italy. Least expensive way to travel.
