well, actually i feel our country has much less poverty and illiteracy then many,,,,, and its really what your standard is,,,, most in our country , while struggling and poor,,,, still have shelter, food,, electricity,,,, televisions etc,,,,,, and if they struggle to achieve these things, often they will qualify for a program to help them,,,,,, so in a sense,,, that is not being poor,,,,,, we have a very high percentage rate of people who have basic literacy,,,,, they can read and write,,,, and most complete middle school if not high school,,,,,,, so in the context of the world and of America 100 years ago, we are much less poor and illiterate, we are not starving and dying in the streets,,,,, other then that,,,,,,, while children may live in a poverty state,,, once they are of age, with all the opportunities out there,,, if they continue to be illiterate and very poor,,,,,, its by their choice,,,,, you can get a free education in this county,,,,, adult education and community colleges,,, which will lead to jobs
one reason it appears our schools are doing so poorly based on their standardized test, is that we attempt to educate all our children,,,, not just the wealthy ones, or the ones who do well,,,, and one reason it appears we have many living in poverty is our poverty line is high,,, i certainly have lived below it and lived well, had all my needs and some wants met

Here are some ideas: -1- Birthplace, as some countries are much richer than others and offer more opportunities for economic development. -2- Social environment, especially the lack of supportive, well-educated parents and/or parents with a family history of mental illness, for example. Child abuse (especially sexual, physical and/or psychological) is also a huge factor here. -3- Use and abuse of addictive substances, especially drugs and alcohol. Many people addicted will simply blow all their money on drugs and end up destitute. See also -2- above, as addiction is often correlated to bad family situations. -4- Respect of social norms as far as interaction, appearance and behaviour are concerned. It's hard to find a well-paying job if you are weird, badly-dressed and/or antisocial. -5- Unusual and/or antisocial career choices. For instance, being an actor can mean big bucks if you are Tom Cruise or George Clooney, but many actors never make it to the big time. -6- Lack of legal property protection and/or adequate judicial environment. You can be rich, but if anyone can rob you at gun point, you won't stay rich very long. See also -7- below. -7- State of war, terrorism, revolutions all contribute to poverty. Many states in Africa are extremely rich in raw materials, but are locked in endless wars or revolutions. -8- Resistance to change, to new ideas and/or new technologies. Using a computer at home was unthinkable 50 years ago. People who don't know how to use a computer today have a serious disadvantage when it comes to finding a job. And so on and so forth, these are just a few ideas. Check the sources for a more general treatment of these questions.
