well, actually i feel our country has much less poverty and illiteracy then many,,,,, and its really what your standard is,,,, most in our country , while struggling and poor,,,, still have shelter, food,, electricity,,,, televisions etc,,,,,, and if they struggle to achieve these things, often they will qualify for a program to help them,,,,,, so in a sense,,, that is not being poor,,,,,, we have a very high percentage rate of people who have basic literacy,,,,, they can read and write,,,, and most complete middle school if not high school,,,,,,, so in the context of the world and of America 100 years ago, we are much less poor and illiterate, we are not starving and dying in the streets,,,,, other then that,,,,,,, while children may live in a poverty state,,, once they are of age, with all the opportunities out there,,, if they continue to be illiterate and very poor,,,,,, its by their choice,,,,, you can get a free education in this county,,,,, adult education and community colleges,,, which will lead to jobs
one reason it appears our schools are doing so poorly based on their standardized test, is that we attempt to educate all our children,,,, not just the wealthy ones, or the ones who do well,,,, and one reason it appears we have many living in poverty is our poverty line is high,,, i certainly have lived below it and lived well, had all my needs and some wants met

You just answered your own question. Illiteracy and a lack of a good education may not be the sole causes of poverty, but they come in at a close second. Education and hard work and a strong work ethic are the big three to getting out from under crushing poverty, or succeeding at life in general.

The cause of illiteracy is the failure of the education system. There is no reason why someone that attends school should not know how to read. Poverty is associated with illiteracy, but drugs and negative social environment contribute to the problem.

Here are some ideas: -1- Birthplace, as some countries are much richer than others and offer more opportunities for economic development. -2- Social environment, especially the lack of supportive, well-educated parents and/or parents with a family history of mental illness, for example. Child abuse (especially sexual, physical and/or psychological) is also a huge factor here. -3- Use and abuse of addictive substances, especially drugs and alcohol. Many people addicted will simply blow all their money on drugs and end up destitute. See also -2- above, as addiction is often correlated to bad family situations. -4- Respect of social norms as far as interaction, appearance and behaviour are concerned. It's hard to find a well-paying job if you are weird, badly-dressed and/or antisocial. -5- Unusual and/or antisocial career choices. For instance, being an actor can mean big bucks if you are Tom Cruise or George Clooney, but many actors never make it to the big time. -6- Lack of legal property protection and/or adequate judicial environment. You can be rich, but if anyone can rob you at gun point, you won't stay rich very long. See also -7- below. -7- State of war, terrorism, revolutions all contribute to poverty. Many states in Africa are extremely rich in raw materials, but are locked in endless wars or revolutions. -8- Resistance to change, to new ideas and/or new technologies. Using a computer at home was unthinkable 50 years ago. People who don't know how to use a computer today have a serious disadvantage when it comes to finding a job. And so on and so forth, these are just a few ideas. Check the sources for a more general treatment of these questions.

In the USA? Bad choices people make.

Here s how you avoid poverty. First get all the education you can. Second, do not have children until you are married. Third once married stay that way. More importantly find a job and stick to it! In this country we tend to pay for seniority. The longer you are on the job the more you will make. Most important of all DON'T BREAK THE LAW! Do these things and poverty will be a thing of the past.

Simple question that's difficult to answer.

We live in a country where the social/economic system makes it easier for the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer.

It would take a poor person several years to accumulate something like, $2000...

When a rich person could just take the wealth they already have and make that within a few hours.

The rich are not interested in helping the poor. It seems almost as if the rich see the poor as their enemies or their opposition. Class War.

Education in this country is poor for the poor. lol. It seems like those who are best qualified to educate poor kids from poverty aren't allowed to do so... mostly because they're poor too. lol

Then there's a stereotype about poor people. Poor people aren't expected to read the news paper. Poor people aren't expected to invest their money. Poor people aren't expected to be responsible.

Those who are not poor force these stereotypes on those who are. And those who are poor are forced to fit these labels to gain a little wealth from those better off than them.

This is a huge mess that isn't getting any better.

Poverty and illiteracy are rare in this country. It all depends on what your definition of poverty is.To the extent it does exist, blame it on the welfare culture the Government created.Illiteracy that's caused by bad parenting and the Education industry. An industry controlled by the Teachers Unions by the way.

The answer to both questions can be traced back to education. People who avail themselves of the opportunities available through the educational system tend to do well in life while those who don't tend to stay closer to the poverty line. There are a variety of deeper underlying factors which attribute to this in the form of people who do not have the drive or motivation to succeed and teachers who do not take an active interest in actually teaching, but the answer still comes back the same as to the root cause.
