Of course he will be visiting the doctor today, but my husband has been having shooting pains in his lower back and down his leg all weekend. It got bad last night. I rubbed icy hot on it and he took Ibuprofen but got no relief. He was up all night. I think it is his sciatic nerve but not sure.

Sounds like sciatica from your description but who knows. My ex has major sciatica problems and when he has severe 'attacks' (a few times a year), he has the same symptoms you described. When it's really bad, he needs to use a cane to get around because of the problem it causes with his leg. It's actually from a skateboarding injury he got when he was in his late teens though it didn't start to bother him until a few years later (he's 31 now). He has the same problem with pain killers/creams not working.

From the symptoms that you describe it sounds like a nerve or nerves are being pinched on which is causing the shooting pains down into the legs. You do not say where in the legs so it does not necessarily have to be sciatica. The public often uses sciatica as a general descriptor of pain going down into the legs but there are many other nerves and structures that if involved can cause the pain to go down into the legs. The doctor may prescribe some meds for short term relief and may order some x-rays and/or an MRI. He may also refer him to a Physical Therapist which would help him to alleviate his symptoms.

It sounds like his the nerve to his leg has pressure on it. It will have shooting pains down it. Mine has not bothered me for a while, but I don't lift like I used to. I hope never to experience it again.

sounds like a pinched nerve to me, a chiropractor would probably be the best idea. a regular doctor will probably put your hubby on a bunch of meds. Send him to the doc, and if he comes out with a prescription form, go to a chiropractor, and he'll fix it for good.
