Although Zealand is in Denmark, that is actually irrelevant in terms of why New Zealand is called New Zealand. It was named after the Dutch province of Zeeland, because Abel Tasman (also Dutch) was the first European to reach the country back in 1642.

Zealand is in Denmark. Zea is a Danish word meaning "sea" so therefore Zealand was very close to the sea.

This is particularly apt for New Zealand because it is completely surrounded by the sea.

New Zealand = New Sea Land.
