Rumour has it that Jacobite supporting Scots would toast 'The King/Queen', passing their toasting glass over a glass over water to symbolise the escape to Skye by Bonnie Prince Charlie, over the water. Anyone able to confirm or deny this?

Following the Scot's defeat at the battle of Culloden, Bonnie prince Charlie fled to France, escaping in a boat rowed by Flora McDonald. France was a traditional enemy of England and ally of Scotland. The Loyal Toast was thus born, 'The King Across the Water. The legacy of this Auld Alliance is still upheld - just as the Scots maintain their own distinctive education, legal and banking systems.

Sadly Charlie on reaching France sunk into a decadent lifestyle becoming enormously fat and had no interest in returning to Scotland.
