Priests used to be allowed to be maried in the Catholic religion.
Then the church forbid it. I guess the vatican did not want to pay for the upkeep of the widows and orphans.

I shouldn't answer this question! The religion best known for having priests is Roman Catholicism. And the pope says, no, priests cannot marry. This is what the pope says. But what does the Bible say? There is no office of priest for the new testament church. This priesthood has been carried forward from Judaism. I don't know how much of Scripture has been misinterpretted by Catholicism but this is a glaring error they have made, spiritualizing, if you will, some old testament teachings given to the Jews and incorporating them into a new man made religion. Wrist slaps for all involved! But consider this. There is a new testament priesthood, and it is composed of all believers who have been born again by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. (1Peter 2:5) And there is a priest, our high Priest, the Lord Jesus Christ. (Heb 8:1) He is able to save us and he ever liveth to make intercession for us. (Heb 7:25)
I know I wandered off topic, so please forgive me!

Clergy are allowed to be married in most Christian denominations and other religions. And Anglican priests who are married and then convert to Catholicism are allowed to remain married.
So there are even married priests within the Catholic Church. There was one at my university.

If I am not mistaken, the only religion that doesn't allow its priests to marry is the Catholic Church. I don't know of any Protestants that don't allow it. To my knowledge, Jewish Rabbis must be married. I cannot speak for the Muslim faith on this as my knowledge of that faith is somewhat limited. And I know there are no restrictions on us Pagans.

Greek and Russian Orthodox can marry and still be priests but canot be bishops unless unmarried and monks.
Coptic priests can marry too, I think.

Even Peter, the original apostle, was a married man. Jesus healed his mother in law. But he was hardly ever with his wife, he was always traipsing off here and there, following the glory he saw in his eyes. Judas took the hit for the real adversary.
