I wondered if anyone has ever tried to fit their own fitted kitchen? Is it something my partner and i could manage (except for electrics and gas which we'd get professonals in for)? Homebase wanted to charge £2500 for a tiny kitchen, so we're contemplating taking it into our own hands! any thoughts? similar experience?

I have nearly finished our kitchen. I am handy and have plenty of tools. I got the units from Band Q who were pretty good and took back stuff that was over with no grumbles. The tops are pretty hard to fit if you want a really pukka job and so I got somone in and he did it well but taking the stuff out the boxes and putting it together is easy and not somethng you should be paying somone to do. Have a go - it seems impossible but once you get into it its like a jigsaw.

I would go for it ! Like a few other people have said, go to howdens and get the ready made base units, thats saves a huge amount of time. With the money you save by fittin it yourself, splash out on a thick worktop, it will make the kitchen look expensive. When fitting the base units, start in the corner, make sure its 100% level and work from there. also if your gonna have splash back tiles, fit them first before your wall units, and that will give you a nice level to work from. Im sure you'l do fine, Good luck !

Did mine myself and it was quite straightforward!

If you have a kitchen already installed just replace the fascias if the units are OK in themselves! Recently refitted a friends kitchen fascias as well - got them from Ikea at a cost of £119, new taps from Wickes £39.00 and two new worktops from Homebase for £30 each! Basically got a complete kitchen refit for under £350 (inc new tiles as well).

Only thing to consider with Ikea fascias is that they are made slightly bigger than our standard sizes so you have to carefully cut the bottom (or top depnding on fitment) and rebond the trim. Nothing a table saw can't cope with (about £20 to hire) or £40 to buy from Argos.

need the tools and a good diy book and hard work
power tools all the way - cheap ones are fine
plumbing too best left to experts but not impossible
units easy to put together
all simple really
just takes time and plenty of "f***s" in my experience!!!!! :)
get stuck in and do it when weather better so you can stick stuff outside and do stuff outside before bringing it in and light nights!

If you go to Howdens, you can get the bases already made up. put them in place then fit tops facia's etc, they can supply everything obviously messure space so that you can get correct base units to fit.

Have fun

I fitted mine, including the electrics!
It is not hard, just think it out before you start.
