Another term for criminal profiling. It is basically police looking at an individuals behaviors, apparel and reactions to police presence. They couple this with time of day, type of neighborhood and any crime trends in the area. With those factors, and a little gut feeling, they watch a specific person and determine if there is criminal activity afoot. They may consensually contact or detain someone, depending on the strength of the profile. It is a legal way to attempt to locate or deter crime.

Profiling; a 'partial and schematic set of lines giving a sense of the shape or outline of an offender or suspect'. police frequently use this method to help give their enquiries 'direction' as to the sort of person they may be seeking for a particular type of crime.
