I went to see him for the weekend (3hours away by car), and thought I really liked him, now that I'm home I think I love him, is this normal? and why do we do this?

Feeling is hard to describe and express. When you are far and away, obviously you do miss him and that feeling has turn to love. When you are with him, you already felt his existence and you felt contented, which in another way makes you feel you only like him and the feeling is not that strong.
Well, that happens to me too. Funny thing, when my bf is away, I miss him so much that i just wanted to wait for him, the yearn, the feeling is strong. But when he's at home with me, I felt contented I can just play my pc games and do my stuffs as if I dont need him.
But its not that I dont love him when he's around but just that I felt him being there is enough and contented. In a relationship, whatever one felt or do has to be interactive. For our feelings to be strong or low, its up to us. I'd tell myself although I felt contented, but I'll still need to make him known that he's wanted by me. If not, he might felt likewise and neglected.
Try doing something special for him or with him, you'll feel different!

how long have you been together? if youre 'new' then its normal, youre just adjusting to your feelings.
im not entirely sure if its normal, but for my personal experience, sometimes im like that. the first time i told my bf i love him was when he just got off the bus and i just texted him to tell him that. its probably because youre missing him already and remembering the fun times you spent together.
but of course, its important that youre sure love the person, and not just being in love with the thought! i hope you know what i mean. =) goodluck, and dont worry too much.

thats what love does to a person, i love that feeling, do you get the butterflies? people have always been lik that " you dont know what your missing untill its gone" not the exact same in your case but close. when you get home and you know you cant just walk into the other room and see him. so it make you mis him and think about him. do you feel excited for no reason too sometimes? i love the way being in love makes you feel crazy,... dont you

Love is not a feeling but an action(love is patient,love is kind,etc).Feelings change often.
So if you base your love for your bf according to what you feel,it's normal to feel loving him more when he's away.Bec you miss him too.

That is normal, that is how I have felt with my boyfriend of 2 years. Your feelings for him are developing, whether it be the euphoria or the seperation, you are getting stronger feelings.
