When I was younger, about 6 or 7 I guess, our bay sitter of the time *think home daycare* had a dog I remember being reffered to as a miniature collie. Sure enough, what I remember was a little bitty dog that looked just like a rough coated collie.

As of late I've been entertaining a mild obsession with dogs in general, and I've found that what I beleived then is not true: Not all breeds come in miniature. So my question is, did the baby sitter have a dwarf, or is there really a breed that ressembles a miniature collie? For all I know she may have been conned into buying a pomeranian that just happened to have those markings. it's been more than ten years, so I don't remember the exact characteristics.

After looking up the sheltie, I'm going ta assume that's what the dog in question was. I know the woman reffered to her as a miniature collie on more than one occasion, but maybe back then I wasn't alone in thinking all breeds came in miniature.

I can find the breed standards on the AKC site just fine, but it more than helps to know what you're looking for. There are so many breeds not recognized by the AKC either way.

I was freaking 7 last I'd seen or even really heard of this dog, and even now I have no experience with either breed that I can speak of, so forgive me for unknowingly confusing the two when I was in 2nd grade because that's what I was told.

Yes, a sheltie resmbles lassie. I have gotten mixed reults, though when it comes down to: Is there an actual breed called a minature Collie?
Here is some information on a Sheltie, which can be mistaken for a minature collie.
Although a Shetland Sheepdog resembles a small Collie, it is not a miniature collie. The term "miniature collie" implies that the Sheltie is a bred down version of the collie, which it is not.
Here is more information on a sheltie, just follow this link:

Many people mistakenly call the Shetland Sheepdog a miniature Collie. Although the Sheltie may resemble a smaller version of the Collie, they are two separate breeds. The Shetland Sheepdog is somewhat smaller than the average dog, rarely weighing more than about 18 pounds and reaching up to about 16 inches in height. They have a double coat that protects them from inclement weather. The outer coat is straight, coarse, and quite long, while the undercoat is short, thick and moderately soft. The coat of the Sheltie is usually black, shades of brown, or blue and can have white or tan marking. The Sheltie's head is long and wedge shaped with almond-shaped eyes.

Along with all the other info youve been given, you should also know that they tend to be a very vocal breed. By that I mean they bark ALOT. Most of them do anyways. They also require regular grooming at a salon, every 6-8 weeks, unless you brush EVERYDAY. They have a thick wooly undercoat much the same as a Collie or Husky, this undercoat must be brushed out regularly or it will become matted and he will need to be shaved. I know a sheltie that only weighs 14 pounds, now thats a small sheltie!

Bichon frise's are good with families, and are hypoallergenic, meaning they do not shed. though in my personal opinion they are super boring and nothing special. a dachshund is one of the slowest dogs, in terms meaning dumb. they piddle a lot, and are slow to learn. though they are cute and adorable wiener dogs they are DUMB. and i assume you are asking for a smaller breed probably because of house size, or you just feel you could only handle a smaller breed and that is understandable so i do not think a golden retriever would suffice. personally i have a shetland sheep dog (sheltie) its like a mini lassie dog, a miniature poodle (the middle size) and a german shepherd. the top three smartest dogs in that order. I trained my sheltie to be a therapy dog and agility. my poodle is an apricot and my mother has a lot of fun grooming it and giving it the silly haircuts because they are also hypoallergenic and do not shed, they have human hair and you can also dye it. just please dont embarrass it with a pink job. i have been trying to convince my mom to dye it to look like a leopard or something.. still in the process. german shepherds are just amazing in general, darla lives with me in my apartment in san francisco and requires a lot of excersize and is a huge load for a full time working student. she is also being trained as a therapy dog to go into class with me and such. i used to work at a petstore for two years and we sold many small breeds and if you dont want a yappy, shedding dumb dog i would highly recommend the miniature poodle. second smartest dog. and very obedient WITH THE PROPER DISCIPLINE AND TRAINING FROM THE OWNER. they are the only two breed of dog (i believe) that come in three sizes, standard miniature and toy. toys have a lot of health problems because they are so small so miniature is the best bet. black white and apricot. theyre fun and funny and have a long life span. im not just saying get a poodle because i have one, they are just the overal winner :) GOOD LUCK

You are writing of the Shetland Sheepdog. It looks like a miniature collie, but is a seperate dog all together. I believe it was crossed many years ago with a Border Collie.
Shetland Sheepdogs are herding dogs and are very loyal and affectionate to their owners, but can be reserved with strangers.

You definitely are talking about a Shetland Sheepdog. They look like small collies and some people call them that but they are a separate breed.
