We are thinking of driving to Canberra to visit friends but want to make a bit of a sightseeing trip out of it. Can anyone suggest an interesting town to visit on the way and stay overnight?

We are thinking of driving to Canberra to visit friends and thought that as we haven't seen much of NSW or Victoria we would like to sightsee a bit on the way and stop overnight somewhere in each direction. Can anyone suggest and interesting route and stopovers?

Presuming you want to stay on sealed roads, here's some suggestions that can work independently or in any combination:
1. Take the Maroondah Highway out of Melbourne, then either onto the Midland Hwy to get back to the Hume at Benalla (straight road), or through Mansfield on to Whitfield (twisty road) and down the King Valley to Wangaratta.
2. Turn right before Wangaratta, buy some wine and proceed to Beechworth. This is a beautiful region and here or the foot of the Snowy Mountains would be good for overnight, either in a town or a country B&B.
3. From Beechworth or Wodonga take the Murray Valley Hwy to Corryong at the foot of the Snowy Mountains. From there you can either take the Alpine Way to Thredbo and Jindabyne (power station tour at Khancoban?) or the high road through Cabramurra (Australia's highest town) and Kiandra to get to Cooma and on to Canberra, or return to the Hume via Tumbarumba and Tumut.
As tentofield suggested, I'd come back on the Monaro Hwy-Gippsland route, which is generally an easy drive. Another possible detour on that route is Moe to Lilydale via Noojee. Twisty but pretty.

If you go up the Hume Highway, there is plenty to see.
Glenrowan is in the middle of Ned Kelly country. It was at the siege of Glenrowan that he was caught.
Rutherglen has some wonderful wineries.
Turn right at Wangaratta for Millawa - wine, cheese and other goodies.
Albury/Wodonga for the River Murray and the Flying Fruit Fly Circus amont other delights
Gundagai is on the Murrumbidgee and has the Dog on the tuckerbox.
Yass is a very old country town and has improved a lot since the highway by-passed it.
Coming back, take the road through Cooma and then to Bega on the coast and follow the highway or down through the mountains and Bombala to the Princes Highway and drive back to Melbourne through Gippsland. Both are very pretty roads with lots to see.

Usually takes about 8 hours pretty much non-stop. Even with Albury by-pass, I doubted it can save you 3 hours. Driven from Canberra to Melbourne - several years ago , perhaps, but the distance won't have changed that much.

I wouldnt bother stopping anywhere on any of the roads. You will be sorely disappointed. Theres stuff all worth seeing unless you want to just drink coffee and eat.
