I'm not sure; stress, boredom? It's hard to say without knowing his situation. My dog used to do it all the time - but that was when the other dog we had died(....). Maybe he has parasites or something - check his fur carefully, as any trip to the vets can be costly(though bring him there eventually if you have to). When you take him to be groomed, perhaps they can check for you, or give him a special bath. Try to divert him when he does it, because it can't be good for his coat, skin etc. Brush him thoroughly too - Good luck! (poor thing!)

Where is your dog eating its fur? If it's in the back end, it's probably a dry or hot spot. Call the vet and let him/her make a recommendation how to solve the dog's problem.

I swear that my dog loves to eat her own fur (as in, I clean her brush and she jumps around me like I am holding a steak). She has only managed to eat it once (cause I threw it in an uncovered basket), and she was fine, so it can't be too unhealthy, though I wouldn't be allowing your dog to do it on a regular basis.
If you are talking about making small little bites at his coat, he is just grooming out knots and matts in his coat. Nothing to be alarmed about.

It sounds like he has some type of skin allergy. Go to your local petstore, and buy some Oatmeal Shampoo. It's specially made for dogs with skin allergies, and helps with irritation and itching.

Skin irritation, allergy or fleas.
Check for something physical first then we can start working on the psychological factors such as boredom.
A vet check is always best.
