it goes all the way back to ancient times when some people believed that cats were gods and others believed dogs were gods and there is where dogs and cats being enemies is from

And...um,...you don't think that the CAT CAN'T be food for the DOG, if the dog can catch it? Cats & dogs are NOT natural-born enemies. Almost everyone I know has both cats and dogs ALL living PEACEFULLY under the same roof. It all depends upon the owners responsibility and how these animals were raised. First--always know, the CAT is going to set the rules, the DOG will adapt. THAT'S the way it is! Dogs will only chase cats because they are fast, and a challenge to run after, and for the most part--they are playing "prey-and-predator".

It may be a challenge to a dog to dominate a cat. I've seen a big dog put a cat's head in its mouth, but the dog didn't bite. Then I'd see it put it's large paw on the cat's back to hold it down. I think dogs chase cats because it is a chase. That's what dogs do. It also may be because of the smell. I know this is gross, but some dogs eat cat poop out of a litter box. But cats won't eat a dog's. Dogs have wolfpack mentalities and characteristics. Some cats won't kill rats for food. They play with them before they kill them, typical predators, just like their much larger cousins in the wild, too.

Some Dogs will naturally chase any animal they dont know. I have taken in cats with dogs that never even saw a cat before and they got along just fine. It depends on the dog.

It's all in the upbringing... dogs & cats that were raised together aren't enemies. Neither are cats & rats who were raised together. Dogs hate other dogs too - so I don't think it's a "race" issue - it's more like a "stranger" issue.

cats can be food to dogs too. or small dogs can be food to big cats.

not all dogs and cats hate each other i live with 1dog and 3cats and they love each other'and even prefer to drink out of the same water bowl...my poodle peanut kinda thinks of hisself as a half cat half dog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

"Domestic Domination" Man domesticated them both, and for different reasons. I'm sure some of it has to do with "who drinks from the water bowl first" !!
