Where did you try to use your debit card? If you're trying to buy something online, you need to make sure that your debit card has the Visa or Mastercard logo. Otherwise, it can't be run as a credit card and can't be used for online purchases. When a payment is processed as a debit card, it requires that you enter your pin ... and there's really no safe way for you to do that online. If its not being accepted anywhere else -- like the store or the ATM -- this probably means you don't have available funds. Check your balance just to be sure.

If you are trying to purchase something online you need to make sure there's a logo: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover. You cannot purchsae things online using your debit card as credit, unless you have a check card.
If you want to purchase things online using your debit, you need to talk to your bank and have them convert it to a check card. That way you can have the logo on the card and the expiration date, etc to purchase items.
Make sure you have funds in your account. With a debit card funds are withdrawl immediately and the post to your account fast. So there may not be money in your account for you to purchase items.
As safety. There really is no safety online or offline in the stores. Recently a security breach has been made by a company of customer's personal information for customers who purchase the items at the store (in person) not online.
I have been purchasing items online for many years and I have never had a problem. You just have to use common sense when purchasing online. Good Luck.

Could be the machine simply cannot read your card. Like the question I posted a little while ago saying that my card had become demagnitized. (i will no longer be keeping the double AA batteries that power my cd player in the same pocket as the one I keep my wallet in.) Not even the walmart card reader can read my card and I can forgettabout the ATM machine's until I get it fixed or replaced. If you have a Mastercard, Visa, AmericanExpress, and or a DiscoverCard logo on the card contact the in bank handler of card management, I have A VISA logo on my card as such I need to speak with the Visa company card problem handler at my loal bank branch...

For debit cards you must make certain that you enter your billing information accurately, and that you include all of your personal information, including the CVV code at the back of the card, and any middle initial. Also, as the person previously alluded to, your card must have a logo of a major credit card (Visa/MC, Amex, Discover, Diners Club) that the corporation you are attempting to buy from accepts.

I'm not sure what you mean but I had a situation that I was supposed to key in credit for payment to be taken from my checking account. They told me if I keyed debit, I would be charged a fee.
Is this close to what you are talking about? Were you supposed to key in credit or debt?
