My husband has IBS his symptoms were diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomach pains, weakness. When he first had these problems he went to the doctor because he lost a significant amount of weight and the doctor wanted to make sure he didn't have cancer once that was ruled out they did a colonoscopy and found his instetines were inflammed and he had IBS.
he had to eat bland foods, no soda, no acid

My mum also has serious problems with IBS, but it seems to be triggered by/due to different things in different people. Perhaps he could try (if he hasnt already) getting a food intolerance test as it may be something specific he is eating that triggers it. Alternatively, keeping a food diary and cutting certain things out of the diet to see if it has any impact. I just read Lollipops reply above, who obviously doesn't have and has never met anyone with, IBS. People with extreme IBS may get to the stage where they cannot leave the house and their diet is severely restricted. When an attack of IBS occurs it can mean pain and discomfort in mild cases, all the way to complete loss of control. Unfortunately when this happens there is nothing to stop it, and if you are not very close to a toilet the result can be extremely embarassing. Your father needs your support through this. The symptoms associated with IBS can be so embarassing that you would not want to tell anyone about it.

I also have this and it has been diagnosed by my doctor. Most common symptoms would be abdominal cramping usually relieved by having a bowel movement. You would also likely have alternating episodes of constipation and dirreha, and possibly see a mucus like substance with your stool. There are medications that help control the symptons, but the things you can do which have worked great for me are avoid caffeine, dont smoke, and eat more fiber in you diet.

IBS is a condition where the bacteria in your bowels (or other things) make your bowels slightly inflamed and cause them to move more. It usually causes excessive flatulence (farts) and diharrea.
Diet management is the best way to treat it...find out what foods make you the worst, and cut back on them. If milk products are the culprit, avoid them, but you may want to eat the bacteria that eat milk, acidophilus capsules. If it's not milk products, yogurt may be your savior.
You may even see if a fast will help you. stop eating for a few days, (3 or 4) it may cause the bacteria culprits to die off enough to eliminate your IBS.
But above all, consult a doctor and/or nutritionist.

The best remedy I have found is called Peppermint Plus, by Enzymatic Therapy. It is also available generically as enteric coated peppermint oil capsules. It seems to help almost everyone I have recommended it to. Also take probiotics, and digestive enzymes (with meals). You should notice significant improvement in a short times if this is going to be effective.

First I would say go and see a doctor, self diagnosis can be dangerous.
Assuming you do have it, take a look at the following site, its full of good reliable info also offers support and suggestions to improve the condition;

I suffer from diviticulitis which is IBS. The symptoms I get are diarrhoea and constipation. I can have the diarrhoea in the morning and by the afternoon I'll be constipated. I sometimes get cramps and pains in the belly but the inconsticency is the pain in the butt.
I find that even if I diet, or fast I don't really get a great deal of relief, although my mother does get some. Obviously, some foods are worse to eat than others. I tend to keep away from foods with high fibre and things like chocolate.
There are tables you can get from your local chemist called IBS which work wonders. Best of all, they are a natural tablet.
Some good sites to visit are:

http://www.irritable-bowel-syndrome.ws/
http://www.abc.net.au/health/library/ff_irritablebowel.htm
Hmm, just thought, I'm in Australia.. but I would presume that IBS is available worldwide.
