wear a carbon toed boot they have the highest rating, but are hard to find and expensive.

You don't have to wear steel toe unless company requires it.

The requirement to wear safety shoes is very much dependent on where you are in the world. Any First world countries will have implemented a Health & Safety policy that requires the companies to provide all practical means of protecting workers health. On a construction site this means wearing safety boots and hard hats, which will protect you from the most common debilitating injuries that you are likely to suffer.

If you are trying to get around it, then I would suggest that you reconsider as you are asked to wear boots to save your feet from injury. Would you rather be comfortable in sneakers for a few years and then crippled for the rest of your life when you drop a pallet on your toes, than wear boots from the start?

Any sort of work boot is good enough. Hiking boots are not as ruggedly made but are okay provided they are all leather. Steel toes are usually needed if you are going to be moving material around such as steel beams. Each company should have safety orders for its different operations. The need for steel toes should be spelled out in there.

I worked for MDOT, and they were pretty strict concerning the specific ANSI rating of the safety shoes you had to wear. Some guys didn't wear them, as long as you have a boot, no one is going to check them out. If they are reimbursing you, they wanted a photocopy of the ANSI certification on the tag. you could always get that and take them back and wear a non steel toed boot.
